Dynamic vs static QR codes explained

Static vs dynamic QR codes: which one lets you fix a link after printing, see who scanned, and keep working if the destination moves. Decide before you print.

The choice between static and dynamic is not a design preference: it decides whether you can fix a mistake after printing, whether you get any data back about who scanned, and what happens years from now if the destination moves. Getting this right before a big print run saves unnecessary reprint costs.

Static QR codes

A static QR code has its destination permanently encoded in the arrangement of black and white modules. There is no server involved in scanning it: the phone reads the pattern and acts on exactly what is there, the same way it would read a barcode on a product.

  • Cannot be changed after printing: the only way to update it is to generate and reprint a new code
  • No analytics or scan tracking of any kind, because nothing is ever contacted at scan time
  • Works for as long as the destination it points to still exists, with no dependency on any third-party service staying online
  • Slightly smaller and simpler pattern for short content, since there is no redirect URL taking up space

Dynamic QR codes

A dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect URL instead of the final destination, such as scanorbit.app/r/abc123. When scanned, that URL is requested first; a server looks up what abc123 currently points to, logs the scan telemetry, and forwards the visitor on. The printed pattern never changes; only the lookup behind it does.

  • Destination can be updated at any time from your dashboard, with no reprint needed
  • Full scan analytics: device, country, browser, and time of scan, all without adding tracking code to your own site
  • Extra controls on the Pro plan: password protection, an expiry date, and a maximum scan count
  • Depends on the redirect service staying online: in practice, that means keeping your ScanOrbit account active

Which one should you actually use?

Use caseRecommendedWhy
Printed marketing materialsDynamicCampaigns get updated or extended more often than anyone plans for
Product packagingDynamicPackaging print runs are expensive to redo if a URL changes
Business cardsDynamicJob titles, numbers, and links outlive the cardstock
A one-off personal QR used onceStaticNo ongoing value in tracking or updating it
Already embedded in a published PDFStaticThe document is already fixed; a redirect adds a dependency with no upside
WiFi credentials on a signDynamicUpdate the password without reprinting the sign every time you rotate it
Every QR code created in ScanOrbit is dynamic by default: you get redirect flexibility and analytics without having to configure anything complex.
