Why scan counts might look different from Google Analytics

Why QR scan counts and Google Analytics visits rarely match: redirects vs page loads, people leaving before the page loads, ad blockers and cookie consent.

Discrepancies between QR platform scan counts and Google Analytics session counts are expected due to differing measurement methodologies.

Key reasons for variance

  • Redirect vs Pageview: ScanOrbit logs the scan immediately upon redirect. If a user closes the browser before your website fully loads, Google Analytics may not record the session.
  • Ad Blockers: Privacy extensions and browser tracking blockers often block Google Analytics scripts while allowing standard URL redirects to function.
  • Session Consolidation: Google Analytics groups multiple page interactions within a 30-minute window into a single session, whereas ScanOrbit counts each physical scan.
  • Bot Filtering: Preview crawlers (from messaging apps like iMessage or WhatsApp) may trigger a scan event while being filtered out by GA4.
Use ScanOrbit to verify how many physical scans occurred, and use GA4 to analyze on-site engagement and conversion behavior.
