Format Architecture

Static vs. Dynamic GS1 Product QR Code

Understand the core operational differences before rolling out physical prints.

Static GS1 Product QR Code

Permanent Raw Data
  • Works completely offline with no internet server required.
  • Destination cannot be changed after printing — requires full reprint.
  • Zero scan counts, geographic telemetry, or device insights.

ScanOrbit Dynamic GS1 Product QR Code

Recommended
  • Update destination URLs or payloads anytime without reprinting.
  • Full real-time scan analytics: city, device, OS, time of day.
  • Pick your own short slug, and no ads on the way through.

Why use a GS1 Product QR Code?

One code on the pack instead of a barcode plus a marketing QR

The GTIN check digit is validated before anything is encoded

Add batch, serial, consumer variant and expiry using the standard application identifiers

Key qualifiers are written in the order GS1 requires, so the link is conformant rather than merely working

Resolves on your own domain, so the destination stays yours

Exports at print resolution for packaging artwork

How to create one — step by step

1

Enter the GTIN

The number under the barcode on the pack — 8, 12, 13 or 14 digits. We verify the check digit as you type, because a single mistyped digit produces a code that scans cleanly to the wrong product.

2

Add batch details if you need them

Lot, serial, consumer variant and expiry are all optional. Add them only when the code is printed per batch or per item; a product-line code carries just the GTIN.

3

Point it at your domain

The link resolves on a domain you control — your product page or your GS1 resolver. We build the URI; where it lands stays your decision.

Popular uses

Food and drink packaging carrying ingredients, allergens and provenance
Batch-level codes that turn a recall into a query instead of a guess
Serialised codes for authentication, warranty and grey-market detection
Cosmetics and supplements showing full ingredient data no label has room for
Pharmaceuticals needing expiry and lot on the pack itself
Brands preparing for retailers moving to 2D codes at the checkout

What is a GS1 Product QR Code?

A GS1 QR code is an ordinary QR code carrying a GS1 Digital Link — a web address laid out so the product's GTIN sits inside it in a form retail systems recognise. That means one square on the pack can do two jobs that used to need two symbols: scan at the checkout like a barcode, and open a page for the shopper who points their phone at it.

Best practices for gs1 product qr codes

1

Only add a serial if you really print per item

A serial number says this is one specific physical unit. Putting the same serial on a whole production run is worse than leaving it out, because downstream systems will believe it.

2

Decide the resolver before you print

The domain is baked into the printed code. Moving to a different domain later means new artwork, so point it somewhere you will still control in five years.

3

Test on a real phone camera, not just a scanner app

A GS1 link should open a useful page for a shopper. If your resolver returns raw data or a 404, the code technically works and practically fails.

4

Give the code room and contrast

Packaging is the hardest surface a QR code lives on — curved, glossy, printed small. Keep the quiet zone and avoid printing over a busy background.

5

Keep the barcode until your retailers are ready

Sunrise 2027 is a direction of travel, not a switch that has already flipped. Most tills still expect a linear barcode, so run both until yours do not.

Print Optimization

4 Golden Rules for 100% Scan Reliability

Avoid the most common print mistakes that cause smartphone camera recognition failures.

Maintain 4-Module Quiet Zone

Always maintain a clear, unprinted margin (the "quiet zone") around the perimeter of the QR code equal to at least 4 modules in width. Without this white border, camera optical sensors cannot distinguish the code from background artwork.

Ensure 4:1 Color Contrast

The foreground modules must be significantly darker than the background. Light colored QR codes on white paper or dark codes on reflective foil surfaces fail in low-light environments.

Level H Error Correction for Logos

When embedding a brand logo in the center of the QR code, ScanOrbit uses Reed-Solomon Level H error correction (30% redundancy), ensuring the code scans even with significant visual obstruction.

Vector SVG for High-Volume Print

Never upscale a low-resolution JPG or PNG for billboard or packaging printing. Export infinite-resolution Vector SVG directly from ScanOrbit to prevent blurred pixel edges at 300+ DPI.
